How to Store Your RV for Winter in Twin Falls

Why Winterizing Your RV Matters in Idaho

Twin Falls winters are no joke. With temperatures regularly dipping well below freezing from November through March, any water left in your RV's plumbing system can freeze, expand, and crack pipes, water heaters, and holding tanks. The cost of repairing freeze damage to an RV can easily run into thousands of dollars, far more than the cost of a few hours of preparation and a few months of proper storage.

Whether you have a Class A motorhome, a travel trailer, or a fifth wheel, taking the time to properly winterize before storing your RV will protect your investment and ensure you are ready to hit the road again come spring.

Step 1: Drain All Water Systems

Start by draining the fresh water tank, the water heater, and both the gray and black holding tanks. Open all faucets, including the shower and any outdoor connections, and let them run until the water stops flowing. Do not forget the low-point drain valves, which are typically located on the underside of the RV. If your water heater has a bypass valve, use it so you do not waste antifreeze filling the heater tank.

Step 2: Add RV Antifreeze

Use non-toxic RV antifreeze (never automotive antifreeze) to protect your plumbing. Using a hand pump or your RV's winterizing valve, pump antifreeze through every faucet, the toilet, and the shower until you see pink liquid flowing. Pour a cup of antifreeze into each drain and the toilet bowl to protect the P-traps and seals. This step is critical for preventing any residual water from freezing and causing damage.

Step 3: Disconnect and Maintain the Battery

Cold temperatures drain RV batteries quickly, and a fully discharged battery can freeze and crack. Disconnect the battery terminals (negative first, then positive) and store the battery in a cool, dry location. Better yet, keep it connected to a trickle charger or battery maintainer throughout the winter. At SJ Storage, our powered indoor units include low-amp electrical outlets specifically designed for trickle chargers, so you can keep your battery in peak condition all winter long without having to remove it from the RV.

Step 4: Clean the Interior and Exterior

Give your RV a thorough wash and wax before storage. Road grime, bird droppings, and tree sap left on the exterior can damage the finish over time. Remove all food, perishables, and anything that could attract rodents. Clean the refrigerator, leave the doors open, and place moisture absorbers or baking soda boxes inside to prevent mold and mildew. Vacuum the carpets and upholstery, and consider placing mothballs or peppermint oil sachets in storage areas to deter mice.

Step 5: Tire Care

Check your tire pressure and inflate to the manufacturer's recommended PSI before storage. If your RV will be stationary for several months, consider using tire covers to protect against UV damage and dry rot, especially if stored outdoors. Some RV owners also place plywood or specialized pads under each tire to prevent flat-spotting on cold concrete.

Step 6: Cover Your RV (If Stored Outdoors)

If your RV will be stored outdoors, invest in a high-quality, breathable RV cover. A good cover protects against UV damage, snow, and ice while allowing moisture to escape so mold does not develop underneath. Make sure the cover fits snugly and is secured against Idaho's winter winds. Of course, the best way to protect your RV from the elements is to store it indoors entirely.
